Call upon Me in the day of trouble;

I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.

Psalms 50:15

Chapter Twenty-eight

Because it was the best way to avoid being tracked, Morning Star entered the river to head downstream. Luckily, it had receded back to its normal levels and was passable. At first, the stallion balked at the cool water, but her soothing words urged him forward.

As soon as it was discovered she was missing along with the chief’s stallion, there would be much anger and chaos. Golden Eagle would be livid and determined to get her back. Her goal had to be to find refuge in a town as quickly as possible. Surely a town would be along the river, she reasoned as the water rippled around them.

Fourteen hours later, a lone white woman wearing buckskin slowly rode away from the river into a small frontier town. It was scorching hot. The late afternoon sun beat down on three cowboys heading to a saloon after their chores were done for the day. They stopped dead in their tracks to stare at a tiny woman doubled over a horse’s mane. From a distance, she seemed to be an Indian, but on closer look, it was blond hair in the braids. Her tiny figure seemed ready to topple to the ground in exhaustion.

“That ain’t no Indian,” one of the cowboys muttered. He suddenly rushed toward the huge stallion and grabbed his reins, and the others followed. Once the first cowboy got close enough, his lined eyes studied the woman’s pale complexion and her uncommon beauty. He glanced back at his buddies. All three of them were in shock.

Morning Star’s eyes fluttered open. Wondering if she could trust the nearest cowboy, she gazed hesitantly into his whiskered face. There was no alternative. She gave him a wisp of a smile and nearly knocked the man over with how pretty she was under a layer of grime.

“Help me, please . . .,” she whispered in English.

“What do you want me to do?” the cowboy asked with sincerity. By now, the other two had gathered near the horse and heard the woman’s soft voice.

“Someplace to rest?” Morning Star asked softly. “My horse, can you take care of him?”

“Anything, ma’am,” the cowboy said with a brief nod.

“And if you would be so kind, could you lift me off? I-I don’t think I can get off myself. I’m much too tired.” All three of the men rushed forward with compassion.

“We’ll help you too, ma’am,” another said. He steadied the fidgeting stallion, and another went to the other side and guided her leg over the horse’s muscular back. Never having seen such a thin little thing before, the first cowboy gently eased her into his arms. The others gazed enviously as the woman innocently tucked her head into the man’s neck, shutting her eyes with complete trust.

All three marched with importance down the dusty street to a weathered clapboard hotel. A few of the townspeople stared at the mystery woman, her three guardians, and her regal-looking pinto horse.
